Storyline of The Greatest Beer Run Ever Part 2: What it able to be about?
The docudrama movie is based on a book by the same person who is the protagonist of this movie, Chickie Donohue and Joana Molloy. It is based on the true story of John “Chickie” Donohue who escaped the war to deliver beer.
Chickie Donohue is a merchant who slacks in his work as a seaman during the day and goes to a bar at night to hang out. He lives with his family in Inwood, New York City. Only his sister Christin opposed the Vietnam War in the family.
He learned one of his friends Johnny was killed in an action and upon joining his funeral he learned another bad news. His other close friend Tommy Minogue went missing in the warzone.
Chickie and his friend Red were planning a mission when he struck an idea. He decided to go to his friends in Vietnam and share beers to uplift their spirits. The next day, he was reluctant to go but Tommy’s mother asked him to give rosary beads to his missing friend if he was found.
Chickie reached Vietnam with cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon in his bag. He helped in many operations there and fell into a dangerous situation but returned home safely. He ultimately realised the cruelty of the war.

What is the Director’s Thought Regarding the Movie?
Director Peter Farrelly took the inspiration from the 13-minute short documentary called The Greatest Beer Run Ever by Andrew Muscato. The first time he heard the story, he was making his award-winning film Green Book in 2018.
Farrelly said the story is amazing. He immediately wanted to get the right and went over Skydance.
He finally got the right beside knowing it was his second film based on a true story. He met the real person who was 81 years old at that time. Farrell said he just wanted to impress him with his movie.
Scenes of Saigaon were originally shot in Thailand. Director shared the turning point of the film where Chickie meets a Vietnamese girl playing with a ball.
Chickie just wanted to be friendly but she had this frightening look on her face which made him realize the horror of war. The little girl who did the role moved everyone on the set.
Farrelly said he knows where Chickie is coming from. He was only 10 when all his neighbourhood was going to the Vietnam War. He was unaware of the effects of war and thought that was a good war.
It wasn’t until in high school that the scenes became clear to him. He couldn’t imagine how the war was so ruthless.
Farrelly didn’t want Zac Efron to be Chickie Donohue at first. He was handsome, kinda unfit for the character. Zac wanted to do a different character and he finally got this.

The movie is about friendship and sacrifices in the backdrop of war. Zac Efron and Russell Crowe did deliver their character very well. It is a crazy and stupid idea to bring beer to his friends who are in the middle of a war.
It ended with his realization of the true colours of war. The film is funny and wholesome at one moment and in another moment it is dark and serious. No doubt it shows how in reality the war is.
