Recap of season 1

Based on the novel and excerpts by Jake Adelstein, Tokyo Vice depicts the crime-filled Japan in the late 1999s. The development of Japan as a country has astounded the world after World War 2, but has remained enigmatic, and humble with their artistic developments and accomplishments and other cultural improvements.

Whenever we hear about Japan, we think of the Yakuza gang and the ruthlessness of them that we might have heard about. The whole plot revolves around the crime taking place in Japan and around Jake Adelstein who moves to Japan in the 90s.

He became the first non-Japanese person to be a part of the country’s popular newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun (Meicho Shimbun). He becomes a rookie reporter in the police press department under the superior Emi Muroyama.

He gets assigned his first task and it is to report on the murder of Mr. Aoki. He gets to Aoki’s house to investigate further but is met with dead-ends as the company from which he has piles of debts doesn’t exist in reality.

Jake copies the address and the logo for further reports, and when he goes to a nightclub with Miyamoto, he meets another American migrant, Samantha. He comes across a yakuza clan and later on, goes to report another incident.

Here, he witnessed a person committing suicide and noticed that he had the same logo too. Then starts a labyrinth and a web of lies, violence, betrayal, underworld dealings, dark contracts and yakuza involvement.

Jake, further tries to look for something to report on but also wants to cover the stories of the two suicides in the city. He and Samatha grow closer, sharing their dreams and Jake, possibly finds a connection between her handler and a clan of yakuza.

Further, we get to see Jake getting involved with two gangs of the clans and attention directed towards him because of his curiosity and the need to find answers to the impending unknown dangers in the city.
