Groban began his professional career as an actor, but when his voice developed, he decided to pursue a career in singing instead. He received his secondary education in the arts from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, which is a public school, is open to all students without charge, and can be found on the grounds of California State University, Los Angeles. At the rehearsal for the 1998 Grammy Awards, David Foster approached Josh with the proposition of having him sing a duet with Celine Dion titled “The Prayer.” Andrea Bocelli was unable to perform due to illness.
He was extended an invitation to come on Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show as soon as it was possible. Foster encouraged Gray Davis to give a performance shortly after he was sworn in as Governor of California in 1999. After watching him perform “You’re Still You” for the season four finale of Ally McBeal in 2001, show creator David E. Kelley cast him in the role of Ally McBeal’s boyfriend.
It was in the role of Pierre Bezukhov in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 that he made his debut on Broadway in 2016. The production received widespread acclaim and earned him a nomination for the 2017 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. This came after he had already performed in two different professional versions of the musical Chess. Because of his appearance at the 72nd Tony Awards, he was nominated for two Primetime Emmys: one for Outstanding Live Variety Special and the other for Original Music and Lyrics for the song “This One’s for You.”
Both of these nominations were for the song. Groban portrayed Tony Caruso Jr. in the original series The Good Cop, which was produced by Netflix. Groban has starred in a number of films, including Coffee Town, Muppets Most Wanted, The Hollars, and Crazy, Stupid, Love, in addition to becoming the host of the television show Rising Star. In addition to this, he has appeared on television in the roles of Danny Chase in the show The Crazy Ones and Walter Bernard Jr. in the show The Office.
