About Stevie Nicks
Stevie Nicks was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised there. She showed an early interest and talent for music by starting to sing country and western duets with her grandfather when she was only 4 years old. She started her career as a singer and songwriter at Menlo-Atherton High School after moving to San Francisco. At that time, she met Lindsey Buckingham, with whom she would eventually begin a committed relationship.
After signing with Polydor Records, she and Lindsey Buckingham collaborated with Nicks to form the band Buckingham-Nicks after a number of less ambitious endeavors failed. The two musicians—who were now intimately involved—were released from their contract with the label after the record was a commercial flop. But not before Mick Fleetwood noticed them and persuaded them to join Fleetwood Mac. Two years later, in 1975, Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled album, featuring the album’s lead hit, “Rhiannon” by Stevie Nicks, ruled the charts.
For the band and Stevie personally, success came rapidly. Around the same time as the legendary album “Rumours” was released in 1977, Stevie’s romance with Lindsey also ended. Stevie’s solo career, which she launched in 1981, was an immediate success. She became dependent on cocaine and later prescription drugs because she could not manage the stress of maintaining a solo career while remaining a member of Fleetwood Mac.
Stevie made a commitment to herself that she would never again perform in front of an audience after completing treatment for her substance abuse problems. Nevertheless, she was enticed out of retirement for the 1997 Fleetwood Mac reunion, and she still performs, records albums, and writes songs today.
