About Def Leppard
Sheffield, England’s Def Leppard, was formed in 1977. Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen, Rick Allen, Rick Savage, and Joe Elliott have played guitars and sang since 1992. (guitars, backing vocals). They were part of the 1980s British heavy metal new wave.
The band’s best sales years were the 1980s and 1990s. On Through the Night, their 1980 first album, peaked at number 15 in the UK. Mutt Lange produced 1981’s High ‘n’ Dry, which helped define their melodic hard rock approach. “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak” was one of MTV’s first rock videos in 1982. However, the album barely achieved the Top 30 and 40 in the UK and US. In 1983, Def Leppard released Pyromania. “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages” both topped US Rock Tracks and the Hot 100. Pyromania reached No. 2 in the US and UK. It achieved No. 2 on the US album chart and seven platinum in Canada.
Hysteria, Def Leppard’s fourth album, topped the charts in 1987 in the UK, US, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and Norway. It achieved No. 2 and No. 10 in Sweden and Germany without Top 50 singles. Over 25 million copies have been sold globally, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album yielded six Top 20 US singles, including “Love Bites.” Other Top 10 songs were “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Hysteria,” “Armageddon It,” “Animal,” and “Rocket” (a Top 15 hit in many countries). Hysteria had four top-10 hits in New Zealand.
Their second studio album and first after guitarist Steve Clark’s death, Adrenalize hit No. 1 in the UK, US, NZ, Canadian, and Australian charts in 1992. “Let’s Get Rocked” peaked at No. 1 on the US Rock Tracks chart and became their biggest hit abroad, reaching No. 2 in the UK, No. 3 in Canada and Switzerland, and the Top 20 in Sweden and Germany. “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” entered the Top 15 in the US, UK, and Canada.
Adrenalize sold 8 million copies worldwide. “Two Steps Behind” appeared on their 1993 album Retro Active. When Love & Hate Collide appeared on their 1995 greatest hits album, Vault, which reached five platinum in the US. Slang was Def Leppard’s first album in 1996. Most of these albums debuted in the UK, US, and Canada’s Top 15. 2015’s self-titled album topped international charts. Diamond Star Halos debuted in the US, UK, and Australia’s Top 10 in May 2022.
Def Leppard has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Pyromania and Hysteria have both earned RIAA diamond certification, making them one of only five rock bands to do so. The band earned No. 31 in VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” and No. 70 in “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” Def Leppard was inducted in 2019.
