In addition, during and after his tenure with the Grateful Dead, Weir was a co-founder of and led the bands Kingfish, the Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, RatDog, and Furthur, which he co-led with former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. During this time, Weir also played with Bobby and the Midnites. Weir, along with former members of the Grateful Dead Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, Grammy Award-winning singer-guitarist John Mayer, Grammy Award-winning bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Grammy Award-winning keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, formed the band Dead & Company in 2015. The band has not yet stopped playing.

Throughout his tenure with the Grateful Dead, Weir was primarily known for his work on the rhythm guitar, but he did sing a good number of the rock and roll and country and western songs that the band played.
