The Rising of Shield Hero follows the life of Naofumi Iwatani, an average 20-year-old university student immersed in video games and manga who suddenly finds himself in a mysterious fantasy world alongside three other men from parallel worlds, who were summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc who take up the roles of the four cardinal heroes who were fated to fight against the monsters which plagued the world, called waves and save the new world they were inhabiting.

The heroes were each equipped with their own legendary arsenal, and while the other three heroes were gifted offensive tools like the legendary sword, spear and bow, Naofumi received the legendary shield.
The shield, being only a piece of defensive equipment, already handicapped him as compared to his contemporaries; he was also betrayed by his one and only trusted companion, who backstabbed him by stealing his belongings and also tarnished his reputation by accusing him of sexually harassing and assaulting her.
