Having prior experience helps. “With child actors, it matters a lot to me if they have prior acting experience, and sometimes it doesn’t matter at all,” Cuba explained. “It depends on the role and the scope of their responsibilities, the director’s style, and the simple reality of how much time they have to film. In this case, it was apparent from the outset that the production would benefit tremendously from actors who understood [the effort the roles required] from prior experience and could access and execute the material with relative speed.
Prepare, but be adaptable. Cuba stated, “I believe the best habit an actor can have is to be sufficiently prepared so that he or she can use that preparation to feel confident and playful in the audition, even if it’s not necessarily for a playful role.” “It’s also crucial for them not to evaluate themselves while they’re in the midst of it if they feel like things are going awry. It’s such a vulnerable act to enter these spaces and invest everything in these fleeting moments; filling them with genuine creative exchange should be essential. The worst habit is probably preparing something so specific that if the casting director or director asks you to modify or do something differently, it causes friction and prevents you from being present.”

How does the casting process work for Stranger Things ?
Finding the proper actors for “Stranger Things” has always been about individuality for casting director Carmen Cuba. She told us in an interview that the original cast members are all genuine individuals. None of these children occupy the same energetic and emotional space as one another.
