He first gained widespread recognition as the frontman for the rock band the Smiths, active from 1982 until 1987. Since then, he has embarked on a successful solo career. After being born in Davyhulme, Lancashire, to parents of working-class Irish descent, Morrissey moved with his family to neighboring Manchester, where he was raised. As a child, he developed a love for books, the genre of fiction known as “kitchen sink realism,” and the pop music of the 1960s. In the late 1970s, he was the frontman for a punk rock band called the Nosebleeds that did not find much popularity, and in the early 1980s, he began a career as a music journalist and wrote a number of books on music and cinema. In 1982, he and Johnny Marr established the Smiths, a band that swiftly garnered global acclaim for their debut album, which bore the band’s self-titled name.

Because of his characteristic quiff and the hilarious and satirical lyrics that he wrote, Morrissey became famous as the leader of the band. He created the persona of a sexually ambivalent social outsider who consciously embraced celibacy to distance himself from the masculinity associated with rock music. Meat Is Murder, The Queen Is Dead, and Strangeways, Here We Come were the three further studio albums released by The Smiths after they had a string of successful singles. The band was met with positive critical reception and ultimately garnered a devoted fanbase. The relationship between Johnny Marr and Morrissey broke down in 1987, leading to the dissolution of The Smiths.

Morrissey launched his career as a solo artist in 1988 with the publication of the album Viva Hate. This album had a strong showing on the UK Albums Chart and was responsible for the creation of a series of hit songs; the follow-up albums, Kill Uncle, Your Arsenal, and Vauxhall and I, all had a similar level of popularity. In order to find a suitable replacement for Marr, he decided to bring on board Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer as his primary co-writers. At this point, his identity shifted into that of a burlier character who toyed with national imagery and the masculinity of the working class.

His albums Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted charted in the middle to late part of the decade of the 1990s, but they received fewer positive reviews than other albums he had released. After relocating to Los Angeles and taking a break from his musical career from 1998 to 2003, he emerged from retirement in 2004 with the critically acclaimed album You Are the Quarry. In the following years, he also published his autobiography and his first book, List of the Lost. In addition, he released the albums Ringleader of the Tormentors, Years of Refusal, World Peace Is None of Your Business, Low in High School, California Son, and I Am Not a Dog on a Chain. He is also known for his music, which includes the songs “California Son” and “I Am Not a Dog on a Chain.”

Morrissey is widely acknowledged as a pivotal figure in the evolution of both Britpop and independent rock due to the huge impact he had on the music scene. In a poll that was conducted in 2006 for the BBC’s Culture Show, Morrissey came in at number two on the list of the greatest living British cultural icons. His body of work has been the subject of academic investigation.

Throughout his whole career as a musician, he has been a controversial figure due to the directness of his convictions and the forthright nature of his personality. He has criticized both the nobility and powerful politicians while at the same time defending vegetarianism and animal rights. Morrissey has been known to hold opinions that are divisive. For instance, he has advocated for a particular sense of national identity while also condemning the effect that immigration has had on the UK and supporting actions considered far-right on the subject of British history.
