On June 23, 2013, Flickr user itsjustatank shared a shot of video game critic John “TotalBiscuit” Bain laughing at the Major League Gaming Anaheim 2013 event. Totalbiscuit then utilized “Cynicallaugh’s” rendition of a cropped image as a sub notice in 2014.
The emoji was included to the BetterTTV Twitch addon as LUL in 2016, then a repainted version of the photograph was added to Twitch as an official emoji on September 1, 2017.
