Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice, who used to be in the band Black Sabbath, created the band Dio in the United States in October 1982.
They were joined by bassist Jimmy Bain and guitarist Vivian Campbell. In May 1983, they released their first album called Holy Diver.
Ronnie James Dio and Jimmy Bain played keyboards on the record, so they brought in Claude Schnell for live shows in 1983 and the Holy Diver tour. Later, Claude Schnell became a full member of Dio, and they released another album in 1984 called The Last in Line.
