Best Gambling Movies on Netflix

Five of the best gambling movies on Netflix

We know nothing beats absorbing yourself into some good old gaming fun, but a window into the way of the world is just as good. Netflix is the largest streaming platform to exist in our time, with over 232 million users as of January 2023. They’ve got thousands of category codes covering niches from various parts of the world, but gambling and casino films can be understood wherever you are.

From live-action thrillers to rom-coms that draw you in and leave you wanting more – Netflix has picked some of the best films of our generation to stream, and we have selected five of the best for you to watch.

1. Win It All, 2017

Win It All, 2017

Launched in 2017, Win It All is a romance and comedy movie that mixes high intensity and suspense. The film is about the protagonist, Eddie, battling his demons, and being given a bag of cash to keep safe. After failing to refrain from checking the bag, whilst the owner was in prison, Eddie looks inside to see a mammoth amount of cash.

Already struggling with finances, Eddie hits the tables with money that is not even his and gets into a whole lot of trouble with the guy he is supposed to be helping. Whilst we are not going to spoil the plot, Eddie ends up winning on the tables, and winning his dream girl – it is a must-watch film!

2. Molly’s Game, 2017

2017 must have been the year for gambling-themed movies because boys were not these good! Molly’s Game is one of the best films of this era, seeing that it was almost a $60 million box office hit. Based on the Molly Bloom Memoir, the movie features Jessica Chastain, who plays Molly, who moves away from her thriving career as a champion skier and begins to dabble in the underground gambling realm.

Though we certainly don’t recommend this, there are fully legitimate ways you can be playing blackjack online, without copying the ways that Molly’s Game prohibits. The movie is just for entertainment and gives a sneak peek into the world of illegal gambling. It is certainly an interesting watch, but for those of us who love to bet on the online slots legitimately, we think we will keep to our tried and trusted methods on our phones!

3. 21, 2018

If you could not already guess, this movie is about the world of 21. Based on the book Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions, in 2003, the film follows MIT math nerds on their mission to count cards. You watch an unlikely bunch go around Vegas winning big on all the tables, by being brilliant at math.

This Netflix gambling movie has won awards in the People’s Choice Awards, so we recommend giving this one a watch. There are highs and lows for everyone, and proof that friendship and business do not mix well.

4. The Card Counter, 2021

The Card Counter, 2021

Released in 2021, the Card Counter is more of a lesser-known film, but it dives deep into the world of casinos. Only grabbing a box office of $5 million, the film did not do too great, but it is still a good, yet logical watch. The film follows Will, the protagonist, who was previously a serviceman in the armed forces, go on to seek revenge on someone from his past. He is extremely intelligent and can count cards like nobody has ever seen – but that is all he wants to do until he meets a young, angered individual who is seeking the same revenge.

On a mission to team up, Will agrees as he believes there will be some kind of redemption for his past if he were to help. The film is in a first-person narrative, and it is one to watch when there is little talking in the background… you need to concentrate!

5. The Hangover, 2009

A classic, and rightly so! Though The Hangover is not specifically about gambling, it is filmed in one of the biggest casinos on the Las Vegas Strip – so we think it deserves a place on the list. The Hangover follows four friends who make their way to Las Vegas for one of their Bachelor parties, just two days before the wedding. Upon awakening after their crazy night, they are dazed without remembering a thing.

The film looks back at traces of where they were and puts the pieces together to help them find their missing friend. It is full of laughs, very light-hearted, and quite easy to watch. As they search for their friend, they have no time to mess around, as the wedding is in just one day. Do they make it to the aisle, ready for the big day? You will have to watch to find out.

But P.S., there are two more after this, so they never learn from their mistakes – typical!
