Who Is YNW Melly?
Jamell Maurice Demons (born May 1, 1999), professionally known as YNW Melly (an acronym for Young Nigga World Melly), is a rapper and performer from the United States of America. He is most known for his tracks “Murder on My Mind,” “Mixed Personalities” (which features Kanye West), “Suicidal” (which features Juice Wrld), and “223’s” (featuring 9lokkNine).
The first is considered his breakthrough, and it gained him additional recognition following his arrest for the double murder of two fellow rappers from the “YNW” collective. Melly vs. Melvin, his debut album, was released in November 2019 and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200.
YNW Melly Career and Achievements
YNW Melly chose this stage moniker in 2016. Jamell Maurice Demons is his real name. The initials YNW stand for ‘Young New Wave’ or ‘Young N ga World.’ These are the initials of a hip-hop group. Anthony Williams, a.k.a. ‘YNW Sakchaser, Christopher Thomas, a.k.a. YNW Juvy, and Corten Henry, a.k.a. YNW Bortlen Henry were also members of this group. Melly began his first project while incarcerated in 2017. Collect Call was the title of the EP.
Mell later released a mixtape titled ‘We all Shine’ on January 17, 2019. This was his second mixtape while incarcerated. This cassette contained a total of sixteen distinct tracts. We all shine was co-written by Kanye West and Fredo Bang. He later teamed up with West again to create the music video for the album ‘Mixed personalities’.
And by the end of March 2019, Melly had amassed a Spotify audience of over 200 million, including over 10 million monthly listeners. ‘Murder on My Mind’ was one of his most popular tracks, streamed numerous times. This was originally a single but was later included on the album I Am You.
Melly released his debut studio album, Melly, on November 22, 2019. Melly against Melvin was the title of the match. This studio album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200, the highest position in his whole singing career. This album also featured the single 223’s, which peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Melly then released a remix to his hit Suicidal on March 13, 2020. Suicidal became the album Melly versus Melvin’s second single. The remix included a brief appearance by late rapper Juice Wrld. This was Melly’s third chart-topping single. And Melly’s work was once again ranked in the top twenty of the Billboard 100.
Murder Charges on YNW Melly
He is charged with murdering Anthony Williams, 21, and Christopher Thomas Jr., 19, on October 26, 2018, as they exited a Fort Lauderdale recording studio. Thomas performed under the persona name YNW Juvy, while Williams performed under the stage name YNW Sakchaser. Both were pursuing careers in rap.
Melly paid tribute to the two youths following their deaths by tweeting: “They snatched my brothers from me out of envy.” He stated that the pair’s killers “want to see me collapsing and coming to a halt, or in jail or a box.” However, he stated on Instagram that he was “turning himself in.” “To all my followers and supporters, no, I was not arrested in Washington, but I am turning myself in today,” Melly stated.
I want you to know how much I adore and appreciate each and every one of you.” A few months ago, I lost my two brothers to violence, and the system is now seeking justice [sic]. “Unfortunately, several stories and lies are being spread, but have no fear, God is with me… I love you.” Cortlen Henry (YNW Bortlen), Melly’s companion, was also charged with murder. However, officials suspect the rapper shot both of them, according to court documents.
Melly has entered a not-guilty plea. Distractify reports that Henry allegedly planned the double murders to appear as a drive-by shooting, in which he and Melly escaped with their lives. Henry reportedly took the two teenage victims to Memorial Hospital Miramar’s emergency department entrance, where they died as a result of their injuries.
Melly is now being held at Florida’s Broward County Jail until his double-murder trial. In April 2020, he tweeted at Kanye West, pleading for his assistance: “@kanyewest requires your assistance Dm.” Melly had been diagnosed with Covid-19 and was attempting to be released from prison at the time.
However, officials dismissed his request for home arrest. Bradford Cohen, his attorney, claimed unsuccessfully that Melly was in imminent danger of death and that the institution provided insufficient health treatment. The families of the rapper’s accused murder victims demanded that he not be freed, alleging that he could threaten them and other witnesses.
In May 2019, he released a phone message from Melly on his official Instagram account. “I just want to assure all my supporters that God exists,” he stated. He has anointed my head with oils, understand what I’m saying? My soul has been purified by him. He has lavishly blessed me… He is the reason I am returning.”
Despite his optimism, the State of Florida is pursuing the death sentence against him if he is convicted of the double homicides. According to Fader, prosecutors believe they can establish “beyond all reasonable question” that the deaths were “particularly brutal, terrible, or cruel,” and that the purpose was financial gain.
Additionally, prosecutors believe Demons was a gang member. He last appeared in court on March 12, 2020. Despite the fact that he was scheduled to reappear on August 13, 2020, court documents indicate that this hearing did not occur, according to Distractify.
