While Scream 2022 continues the franchise’s tradition of messing with horror conventions and expectations for killer twists, the film nonetheless contains some very clear clues to the Ghostfaces’ identity. Since 1996’s Scream, each chapter has challenged fans’ assumptions about who the conventional horror killer would be, who the most likely surprise twist killer would be, and who fits the films’ pattern of expecting both the apparent and unexpected. Scream 2022 is no stranger to confounding expectations and concludes with a startling yet equally predictable reveal of the Ghostface killer.
The costume is not unique in the Scream universe and is easily replicable, allowing others to dress similarly. Ghostface frequently phones its targets to mock or threaten them while masked by a voice changer. In Scream 3, this is taken a step further as Ghostface manipulates targets using technology that enables him to sound like various other characters. Due to the shifting identity of the person behind the mask, Ghostface lacks a clear objective, which ranges from retribution and wanting celebrity to “peer pressure.” Each killer is motivated by the desire to assassinate Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as a result of a chain of events initiated by her mother, Maureen (Lynn McRee); Billy and Stu constructed the alias in order to inflict revenge on Sidney for her mother’s romance with Billy’s father.

Ghostface
Ghostface (sometimes written Ghost Face or GhostFace) is a fictional identity that numerous characters in the Scream franchise have earned. To learn more about the person behind the mask, Kevin Williamson created the character, who is generally silent in person but is voiced over the phone by Roger L. Jackson. Ghostface first appeared in Scream (1996) as a disguise worn by Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) during their homicidal spree through the fictional hamlet of Woodsboro. Marianne Maddalena and Wes Craven discovered the character for the film; the Fun World costume company manufactured and designed the mask as a Halloween costume.
Scream Season 5
The Scream series, commonly known as Scream 5, is a 2022 American slasher film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. It was written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. This is the fifth installment in the Scream franchise. Despite the reboot title, the film is a direct sequel to Scream 4 (2011) and the first in the franchise directed by Wes Craven since his death in 2015. At the opening of the closing credits, the film pays tribute to Craven. Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and Jack Quaid star in the film, which also stars Marley Shelton, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell.
Who Is Playing Ghostface In Scream 5?
Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid) and Amber Freeman are the two new assassins (Mikey Madison). They were both enormous fans of the in-universe Stab series but believed it had veered off course following Stab 8. They resurrected Ghostface and began on a new murder spree in order to supply source material for a new Stab flick to a creatively bankrupt Hollywood (their words, not ours). Their initial attack on Tara was a deliberate ploy designed to lure Sam and the remaining ‘original’ characters to Woodsboro. They intended to pin the murders on Sam, claiming that she was the ideal bad guy as the daughter of the original Ghostface.
Scream Rule: Never Trust The Love Interest
One of the oldest horror laws in Scream’s films is to never trust a primary character’s love interest. This was confirmed in Scream 1996, when Sidney’s boyfriend Billy Loomis was discovered to be a serial killer, and in Scream 4, when Kirby’s would-be hook-up Charlie was shown to be a Ghostface murderer. Scream 2 successfully subverted this stereotype by convincing spectators that Sidney’s boyfriend Derek is a serial murderer, only for him to come dangerously close to being a victim himself. Scream 4 also avoided this with Jill’s ex-boyfriend Trevor, whom she intended to paint as Ghostface when she and her secret boyfriend Charlie were responsible. Dewey’s first statement to Sam in Scream 2022 is that Richie is most certainly the killer because he is the new love interest, which proved to be accurate. As Scream 2022’s dead Dewey (half-jokingly) indicated, Richie pursued Sam in order to raise his plans with Amber for their Ghostface killing spree.

1. Amber Freeman as Mikey Madison:
Amber Freeman is a prominent character in the film Scream and one of the two Ghostface killers. After relocating to 261 Turner Lane, she became interested in the Stab movie. After being unsatisfied with Stab 8, she met Richie Kirsch on a Stab forum, and the two devised a plan to produce a sequel to Stab based on Samantha and Tara Carpenter.
2. Richie Kirsch as Jack Quaid:
Richie Kirsch is one of Scream 2022’s primary antagonists and one of the film’s two Ghostface assassins. He contacted Amber Freeman on a Stab forum. The two devised a plan to make their own Stab film, using Samantha Carpenter as the scapegoat for their killer. To better understand Samantha Carpenter, Richie approached her and developed a romantic relationship with her. Richie rejoins Sam in Woodsboro to save Sam’s sister, Tara Carpenter, from an attack by Ghostface.
Who is the killer in ‘Scream 5’?
As is customary, the Ghostface assassin is invariably a familiar face. The killer, in this case, is none other than Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison), a close friend of Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega). However, just as in the 1996 film, there are two Ghostface assassins; the other is Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid), the boyfriend of our new last lady, Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera).
The couple harasses Woodsboro throughout the 2022 slasher film, but why? To be sure, it always returns to the past. This time, the murdering spree is centered on Sam, who is hiding a horrible secret: she is Billy Loomis’s daughter.
Sam goes to Woodsboro following Tara’s near-death experience and discovers that the contemporary Ghostface killers are targeting and murdering anyone connected to the historical murderers and characters.
Unfortunately for the newcomers, the majority have familial ties to previous franchise characters — Chad and Mindy’s uncle is Randy Meeks, Vince is Stu’s nephew, and Wes is Sheriff Judy Hicks’ son — which makes them enormous targets.
Unfortunately, Ghostface murders most of them early on and assaults the remainder during Amber’s home party (which happens to be at Stu’s former house). Simply wonderful! Anyway, Sam, Tara, and Richie travel to the location to get Tara’s inhaler; however, Sidney (Neve Campbell) and Gale (Courteney Cox) accompany the trio to put an end to this once and for all.
Thus, once the party guests have dispersed, Richie reveals himself to be the other Ghostface assassin – earlier in the night, he claimed ignorance of Woodsboro’s homicidal history or the Stab franchise, but this was all a deception.
As it turns out, Richie is an obsessed superfan of the Stab films, and he teamed up with Amber to stage a new series of murders in the hopes of reviving the franchise’s fortunes after years of disappointment.
WHO DIES IN SCREAM 5?
Scream 5 has a high death toll, as a large portion of the cast, both new and old, perishes. The following is a comprehensive list of those killed by Ghostface and the manner in which they are killed:
- Vince Schneider – stabbed by Ghostface in a bar car park.
- Dewey Riley – Since the first Scream film, Woodsboro’s unfortunate former sheriff has been operating on borrowed time. This time, though, his luck runs out when he attempts to assassinate Ghostface early in the film, and he is gutted in the film’s most graphic slaughter.
- Amber Freeman – Amber survives an accidental fire, but, like so many other previous assassins, she only endures one final scare, dying when Tara shoots her.
- Sheriff Judy Hicks – Scream 4’s deputy sheriff is assassinated in broad daylight by Ghostface.
- Wes Hicks – Wes’s death is possibly the second-worst in the film, as he is slowly stabbed in the neck.
- Richie Kirsch – Sam stabbed him numerous times before shooting him several times to guarantee he did not return.
- Liv McKenzie – Shot in the head by Amber.
- Unnamed police officer – One of the police officers assigned to Tara’s protection ends up on the receiving end of Ghostface’s knife.
