Romeo and Juliet in 1920s Shanghai? Count me in! The great works of Shakespeare are brought into the modern era in this fantastic first novel by Chloe Gong. The characters were interesting to me, even the minor ones. None of them were my absolute favorites, but I didn’t find myself desperately wishing they were dead, either.
The blending of genres into a single work was something that particularly stuck out to me. These Violent Delights combine mystery, romance, and historical fiction with fantastical aspects. As the book’s concepts were novel and not anything I’ve come across before, I found that this added to the interest I had in the characters and the plot.
