About The Doobie Brothers
The Doobie Brothers are a California rock band known for their vocal harmonies and versatility. Tom Johnston (guitars, vocals) and Patrick Simmons (guitars, vocals) are founding members, along with Michael McDonald (keyboards, vocals), John McFee (guitars, pedal steel, violin, backing vocals), John Cowan (bass, vocals), Bill Payne (keyboards), Marc Russo (saxophones), Ed Toth (drums), and Marc Quinones (percussion).
Activists (percussion). Longtime members include guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (1974β1979), bassist Tiran Porter (1972β1980, 1987β1992), and drummers John Hartman (1970β1979, 1987β1992), Michael Hossack (1971β1973, 1987β2012), and Keith Knudsen (1973β1982, 1993β2005).
Johnston led the pop-rock band from 1970 to 1975. Michael McDonald joined the band in 1975 to replace Johnston, who was ill. McDonald’s love of soul music inspired the band. Before leaving in 1977, Johnston and McDonald co-led Takin’ It to the Streets. The rest of the 1970s saw lineup changes, and the band split in 1982, with only Simmons remaining constant. Johnston rejoined the Doobie Brothers in 1987, and McDonald joined full-time for their 50th-anniversary tour in 2019.
Six of the group’s fourteen studio albums have reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 album chart, including 1978’s Minute by Minute, which peaked at number one for five weeks and won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and three Grammys for its lead single, “What A Fool Believes.”
