He completed his Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Alabama State University. His first amateur comedy night was at the Comedy Club post the success of his amateur days he began touring with Jazz singer Will Downing, comedian George Wallace and Dottie Peoples.
His major breakthrough came when he became the host of Comic View. By 2000 he had entered into a 5 year programming deal with HBO.
In 2001 he became the host of BET variety series The Way We Do It. Smiley also made a cameo appearance in All About the Benjamins with Ice Cube and Mike Epps who had main roles in the 2002 film.
He donned Radio Jockey gloves when he became the morning show host of KBFB-FM/97.9.In 2005 he was cast in Diamond Life Reality TV show.
In 2008 he signed up a deal which took his own TV show The Rickey Smiley Morning Show across television sets in the United States of America.In 2017, he became the protagonist of the television series Star.He released his memoir Stand By Your Truth: And Then Run For Your Life, the same year.
