I grew up watching and reading the Diary of the Wimpy Kid films and books, and as such, I was pretty interested to see this new adaptation of the original novel, which I believed would be better than the Long Haul.
To begin, I like the voice acting quite a bit, and it is, for the most part, how I envisioned the characters sounded when I was a child reading the novels. I believe that the film accurately represents the book and does not go too far from it, which may negatively affect others.
I’d have wanted to see more new information, but I like how faithful it is to the source material. I think the animation was also rather good. However, I wish they’d chosen a different kind of animation; I believe I’d have liked some Simpsons-style energy or anything along those lines.
As I previously stated, the film stays faithful to the source material and adds no new material, which may be frustrating for some. And there weren’t nearly as many occasions where I burst out laughing as there were in the first trilogy.
In general, I believe that this version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid is entertaining and colorful but ultimately forgettable. I doubt many people will discuss it, but I am interested in future sequels, particularly for works that have not yet been adopted. I’d recommend this to families with small children and people who loved the original movie and novels.
