The anime Bottom Tier Character Tomozaki is based initially on a light novel by Yūki Yaku and illustrated by Fly. Shogakukan’s Gagaga Bunko has been publishing the series since May 2016. Yen Press licensed the light novel in English.
It has a manga adaptation, too, by illustrator Eight Chida. The manga is serialised in Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker. Comikey has published the manga digitally in English in North America.
The story revolves around Fumiya Tomozaki, a high school student. He is one of the best players of Japan in the game Attack Families under the name Nanashi. He refers to the game as a “godly game” as an equal amount of effort is rewarded with equal fortune, unlike real life.
He thinks real life is a “trash game” while dissociating himself from society. However, in the game, there is one person under the name “No Name” who always comes second in the leaderboards. One day after the match, they decided to meet in real life.
They met, but both were surprised when they found out they were classmates. “No name” is Aoi Hinami in real life. She is best at everything from academics to sports. While always coming second in the game, she is actually jealous.
Meanwhile, Tomozaki is a social outcast. Hinami, taken aback by the truth, decided to help Tomozaki win in life by uplifting his social skills and appearance.
In the second season, Hinami is still tutoring Tomozaki after an upheaval in the last season. They are back again while they both help each other.
