Based on Carl Weberâs novel of the same name, The Black Hamptons is a crime miniseries focusing on two powerful families and the feud between them. The series is set on Black Hampton Island in New York, hence the title.
The Brittins and Johnsons are two of the most influential families in the Black Hamptons. Among the two families, the Brittins are the old-money family, whereas the Johnsons are the new-money family. The Hamptons are listed among 2021’s record-breaking real estate sales, with agents trying to get their hands on them.
When one of the family members, J.B., starts off the season with the most lavish house and most handsome VIP guests, the other family member tries to land the most ravishing listing of the season. And hence, the feud between the two families, the Brittins and the Johnsons, begins as they both try to get their hands on the Peterson property and get the highest bid.

At the end, we saw that Carolyn was about to win the feud between the two families, but nothing could go as smoothly in her family. BET’s decision to cancel Black Hamptons is hugely disappointing but not unexpected. Carl Weber’s stories, portrayal of multidimensional black characters, and black excellence in The Black Hamptons were a breath of new air for the network.
Therefore, the decision to cancel after only four episodes makes me reconsider why I began viewing BET and paying for BET+ in the first place; even though I enjoy several shows on the network, they consistently portray black characters in a negative light.

I also believe it’s great that another black writer, besides Tyler Perry, dominates the networks with his shows. We should be able to see characters perform roles the actor have dominated for decades. If you want black people like me to continue supporting your network, you should start allowing more shows like The Black Hamptons in which black people like me can recognize themselves and the people they know. I could go on, but I will stop here.
When white people take over black networks and have the power to decide the type of stories they choose to depict us as good or bad, it’s a problem, especially when the shows they keep are the ones that portray us in a negative light and anything other than the black excellence’s that so many of us come from but are unable to see.
