About Jackson Browne
Clyde Jackson Browne is an American musician, composer, and political activist. He’s sold 18 million albums in the U.S.
He originally found fame as a teenage songwriter in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s. At 16, he penned “These Days” for Warhol’s protege Nico. He also wrote songs for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the Eagles. Browne co-wrote the Eagles’ first Billboard Top 40 song, “Take It Easy.”
Browne’s 1972 self-titled album. It brought him two Top 40 songs, “Doctor, My Eyes” and “Rock Me on the Water.” Browne worked closely with The Section, a popular session band for his first record and subsequent albums and tours. In 1973, he released For Everyman. It didn’t have a hit song, but it’s now considered his best work and is on several “Best Albums of All Time” lists.
Late for the Sky was his best Album. It reached number 14 on the Billboard 200 and garnered Browne his first Album of the Year nomination. His fourth 2Album, The Pretender, peaked at number 5 with the songs “Here Come Those Tears Again” and “The Pretender.” This continued his streak of better albums.
His best-known piece is 1977’s Running on Empty. It was number 3 for over a year. The live/concept album’s tracks are about touring life. The Album was recorded on stage, in hotel rooms, backstage, and a moving tour van. Many of the Album’s tracks became AOR radio singles, including “Running on Empty” and “The Load-Out/Stay.”
In the 1980s, he released Hold Out, his lone number one album, “Somebody’s Baby” (featured in Fast Times at Ridgemont High), and “Tender Is the Night.” In 1986, he released Lives in the Balance, which included the song “In the Shape of a Heart,” which reminded him of his first wife’s suicide. After it, none of his albums received a gold or platinum RIAA certification.
In 1997, Jackson Browne published The Next Voice You Hear. Jackson Browne released The Very Best of Jackson Browne in 2004. Downhill from Everywhere is his latest Album. It follows 2014’s Standing in the Breach, including his 18-year-old song “The Birds of St. Marks.” 2015 Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Songwriters” ranked him 37th.
