On December 4, 1973, Tyra Lynne Banks was born in Inglewood, California. Carolyn London (now London-Johnson), her mother, is a medical photographer, and Donald Banks, her father, is a computer consultant. Devin, her brother, is five years older than she is. When Banks was six years old, in 1979, her parents divorced. Banks attended John Burroughs Middle School and Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles, where he graduated in 1991.
Banks has stated that she was teased for her appearance as a child and considered a “ugly duckling”; at the age of 11, Banks grew three inches and lost thirty pounds. Banks discussed the results of her Ancestry.com genealogical DNA test on America’s Next Top Model, which revealed that she is “79 percent African, 14 percent British, and 6 percent Native American.” In an interview, she stated, “I am 1 percent Finnish in addition to being 14 percent British, 6 percent Native American, and 100 percent African.” In February of 2012, Banks completed the Owner/President Management non-degree extension programme at Harvard University.

Banks began modeling at the age of 15 while attending school in Los Angeles. Four modelling agencies rejected her before L.A. Models signed her. 16 years old, she switched to Elite Model Management. When the opportunity to model in Europe presented itself, she relocated to Milan. During her debut runway season in 1991, she booked 25 shows during Paris Fashion Week. Banks has been featured in editorials for American, Italian, French, and Spanish Vogue, American, French, German, and Spanish Elle, American, German, and Malaysian Harper’s Bazaar, V, W, and Vanity Fair.
She was featured on the covers of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Spanish Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and Teen Vogue, among others.

The Dancing With the Stars host Tyra Banks is currently unmarried, but rumors circulated in 2020 that she was engaged. Tyra was linked to the film director John Singleton at the beginning of her career. In 1993, the couple met through mutual friends and began dating. Shortly thereafter, he directed Tyra in her first feature-length film, Higher Learning, in which she played a college track star who falls in love with another athlete. A 1995 People Magazine profile revealed that John wasn’t kind to his girlfriend during the audition process, but he later acknowledged that she was the ideal candidate for the part. “When you’re with a woman, you tend to want your own space,” he explained. “This is not the case with Tyra.” The relationship ended in 1996, and John passed away in April 2019.
Tyra was later linked to the singer Seal, and they were first photographed together at the Essence Awards. Asla and Banks Share a 5-Year-Old Son, York
The couple welcomed baby York via gestational surrogate in January 2016. Banks had previously discussed her infertility struggles with People, revealing that she had undergone IVF procedures with Asla in the hopes of becoming pregnant.
“When you think, ‘OK, I’m just going to do it,’ it becomes more difficult as you age… I’ve had some traumatic experiences with in vitro fertilization. It becomes more difficult as one ages. “It is not something that can just occur,” Banks stated.
Banks told People in a statement that she continues to pray for those who struggle with infertility because it was such a “treasure” to hold her son.
“We are overjoyed to welcome our new bundle of joy, a baby boy. As I’ve stated previously, the journey to this point has not been easy. But there was a beautiful, bright light at the end of the tunnel for me and his father, Erik,” said Banks, adding, “As I gaze into the beautiful eyes of my son, I continue to pray daily for all those who struggle with fertility or carrying a child. My hopes and dreams are filled with the desire that they experience what it is like to hold my little treasure, York Banks Asla.
Banks generally exclude her son from her social media accounts, but in April 2021, she posted a photo of them at the aquarium with the caption, “Adventures with my son are something I am looking forward to in the future. My little boy adores aquariums. What is your favourite activity that you cannot wait to return to with your children?”
Banks also shared a photo of York on Father’s Day 2017, writing, “To all the incredible fathers out there who love their children unconditionally, like my mom’s father and my father, too…
