I couldn’t stop smiling while watching this adorable and relatively wholesome anime and I enjoyed the manga. It has a straightforward premise: Senpai is very shy and awkward, and Nagatoro is his cute underclassman who helps him come out of his shell by teasing him mercilessly but never being too cruel.
However, what struck me most about reading the manga was a rarer sense of satisfaction than viewing a typical romantic anime/manga, etc. You recognize that he likes her and that she likes him, but just as you would expect the plot to reach its climax, it subverts that expectation and denies you that satisfaction, which is satisfying in its way.
It is one of the rarer feelings that anime/manga typically evokes in me. Although I do not consider myself masochistic, this dynamic made my heart go to Doki and it appears to be suitable for everyone. It performs its intended function with proficiency. Fun!
